Over 250,000 people gave up their Saturday on 4th March 2017 to show solidarity for ‘It’s Our NHS’ - and the single message they delivered was an emphatic ‘Hands off our NHS’. Labours’ leader, Jeremy Corbyn, delivered an impassioned speech explaining that the current crisis facing the NHS has been allowed to happen by the Conservative government and is preventable. In praising the best health service in the world, Mr Corben explained that denying funding for the NHS is a political decision, made to favour tax cuts for business and the privileged wealthy.
In Nottingham, Unite-sponsored coaches left for London at 8am, carrying enthusiastic Branch members, friends (including members of Nottingham’s own prostate cancer charity Friends and Bredrin (FAB)) and family to the rally’s start at Tavistock Square. Once there, Nottinghamshire Unite Branch joined the hundreds of thousands, spearheaded by shadow chancellor John McDonnell, to march to Parliament Square taking in Whitehall. The rally was good humoured but clearly focused on sending a serious message: the NHS is here to stay and we will not stand by and watch while the Conservative government privatises it piecemeal!
A 100% campaign is being conducted by the Branch to recruit new members and representatives. The ‘100%’ campaign refers to total (100%) union membership in the workplace.
